NBC Learn: News & Information from the NBC Archives

Palomar students and faculty can now access the entire NBC news archives going back to the beginning of film and television through NBC Learn, a web-based streaming video service. It includesthousands of videos, historic newsreels, primary source documents, and photographs from the news division of this legendary broadcast media company. The service also includes related original instructional resources in a variety of disciplines and subjects.

Exciting news from the Library Support Staff Certification Program:

"Tracey Hill and Julie Wright, new graduates from PalomarCollege in San Marcos California, received their Library Support StaffCertification through an agreement between the American Library Association (ALA) and Palomar College. LSSCreviewed the Palomar curriculum and determined it matched the ALA/LSSCcompetencies, thus Palomar graduates are immediately eligible for Certificationas soon as they graduate.

LSSC currently has agreements with five LTA programs thatrecognize their curriculums as matching the ALA/LSSC competencies: The Collegeof DuPage, Waubonsee Community College, and Illinois Central College inIllinois; the Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana; and Palomar College inCalifornia. "

Berg Fashion Library

Provides information on over 600,000 music and DVD/video titles, searchable by artist or performer, genre, and a variety of other ways.

This contains consumer-oriented health information, covering all areas of health and wellness.

Earlier this year we alerted library users about the host site change for our ProQuest research databases (see Jan. 25, 2011 post). All links on the library website were updated to reflect the change, but links to the old host site that may have remained in syllabi or other resources continued to work.

On December 15, 2011, all links to the old host site will cease and no longer work. ProQuest products will only be accessible through the new urls (below, or on the Online Research Databases page):

ARTstor has newly released images from The Image of the Black in Western Art Collection

The W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African American Research at Harvard University has shared approximately 7,000 more images with ARTstor from their highly regarded archive, Image of the Black in Western Art. Image of the Black in Western Art is a rich, deep collection, containing works dating as far back as 5,000 years. The collection captures many of the ways in which African Americans or those of African descent have been depicted in Western art throughout time The collection may be used by Palomar College faculty and students of the arts, but can also be used by those within the fields of the humanities, history, and other social science disciplines.

One Story: Read A Story Each Month

Looking for creative new literary voices? Take a look at One Story, a not-for-profit literary magazine that features one short story each issue from new authors. Here's an exerpt from the current issue's story, "Refund" by David James Poissant (Issue #155, Oct. 7, 2011):

"The evening began in argument. Josh’s first grade teacher had called a parent/teacher conference, and Joy and I were expected that night at school. This was not the standard mid-year check-in. For months, we’d been getting notes. Josh wasn’t finishing his schoolwork. Josh didn’t play well with others. Josh wasn’t paying attention in class..."

JSTOR: Bigger and Better than Ever

The Great Depession was a period of American history when many struggled for survival. To see iconic art of this time such as Dorthea Lange's powerful photographs of migratory cotton pickers, or Bernice Abbott's photographs of urban life in Manhattan, visit ARTstor. Students and faculty can access these and many other images on the topic conducting a basic search using the term "depression."

ARTstor is not only for fine arts students. Images from it can be used to enhance non-art projects, by supplementing a paper or presentation. New Database for Child Development and Education: Videatives streaming videos

Videatives is a web-based streaming service of over 200 short video clips demonstrating scenarios in child development and education. Each video is accompanied by supporting, explanatory text. Together, the visual and textual documents map theory to practice, and generate theory from practice for students and practitioners through demonstrations of children's interactions with others and their environment.

Netlibrary Changes to EBSCO eBooks: Same Great Collection, New Name

Our Netlibrary ebook database has a new name, new look, and new URL. Now called EBSCO eBooks, this collection contains the same great ebooks previously available to Palomar students and faculty, only now you can read them through the familiar EBSCO web-based interface (the same one that brings you Academic Search Premier, PsycArticles, Health Source, and many other research databases). You may search, read, create reading lists, bookmark, and even save or send segments of ebooks directly on your computer.

Newly available historical and archaeological images in ARTstor

Cyprus is rich in history. Palomar faculty and students can learn more about its past by viewing a collection of images of historical architecture now available in ARTstor. See the tombs of kings, survey the tops of Gothic monuments, and the medieval churches that once ruled the lands by simply clicking here.

Also new: Harvard University's Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology has shared over 3,300 images with ARTstor that feature Pre-Columbian, African, Native North American, and Oceanic objects. To access these images, click here.

Banned Book Week, an awareness campaign dedicated to recognizing the importance of intellectual freedom, takes place this year from September 24 through October 1.
In recognition of Banned Book Week, the library is hosting a Banned Book Read Out. We invite faculty and students to please join us and read a passage from your favorite banned book!
While the First Amendement to the U.S. Constitution permits us to enjoy freedom of speech and freedom of the press, many groups continue to try to limit access to certain ideas.
Banned Book Week is a time to recognize the importance of keeping access open to all ideas, regardless of how unpopular they may be.
So, if you read banned books, are glad that you have the option to read banned books, or want to know what a banned book is, join the Palomar College Library in our Banned Book Read Out!
The Read Out will take place Wednesday, September 28, at 11:15 AM on the library's front steps. We hope you join us to hear readings or to read out yourself!

Early Journals Now Available in JSTOR

Palomar students and faculty can now access more articles that ever in our JSTOR databases. Nearly 500,000 articles from over 200 journals published prior to 1923 in the

United State, and prior to 1870 elsewhere, are now included. These publications are part of JSTOR's new Early Journal Content (EJC) collection, which is freely available to existing JSTOR customers as well as non-subscribers. Covering discourse and scholarship in the arts and humanities, economics, politics, mathematics, and the sciences, they provide a wealth of historical data and information in digitized versions of their original formats. Visit ARTstor for images pertaining to the vast field of Latin America studies. From the Pre-Columbian era to the Spanish Conquest; from Cuba's revolution to modern day Brazil; ARTstor is an excellent resource for those studying the history and culture of Latin America. You can browse by geographic region, by museum collections, or by keywords such as Maya, Haiti, Day of the Dead, or even individuals such as Pablo Neruda.

New arrivals! These periodicals are now available at Palomar College:

Bomb Magazine provides a forum for the “artist’s voice” – presenting in-depth interviews between artists working across genre and media. Edited by writers and the artists themselves, contributions explore creative theory and thoughts. Issues are found in the San Marcos campus library.

Treasures: Antique to Modern Collecting contains articles on finding, identifying, valuation, care, display, and research of antiques and collectibles. This publication replaces Antiques & Collecting Magazine, which ceased publication in June. Issues are shelved at the San Marcos campus library.

Quilting Arts covers a wide range of design and textile skills, and includes how-to articles, profiles of artists, and articles that explore contemporary works, designs, and techniques. Issues are found at San Marcos.

Child Development Perspectives (CDP) and Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Develoment join Child Development on the shelves of the Escondido Center library. CDP includes brief articles on modern developmental science and its applications, and Monographs presents in-depth research studies and significant findings in child development and its related disciplines (each issue addresses a single theme). These publications are also available online through the Library catalog.

The following periodicals are now available at Palomar College:

Public Libraries, School Libraries, and School Library Monthly (SLM) are essential publications for professionals and students preparing for a careers in school or public libraries. Current issues are at the San Marcos campus library; SLM is also available online in the Professional Development Collection database (accessible from the Library’s database web page)

Journal of Transcultural Nursing is a peer-reviewed publication that provides practitioners and students with information that addresses health care delivery and needs of different populations. The print edition is found at the San Marcos campus library; online is available through the Library catalog.

Surfer’s Journal includes in-depth stories and essays on the culture, history, and personalities of surfing. Printed on high-quality paper, this publication contains breath-taking images and graphics. Current issues can be found in the Current Periodical reading area on the 2nd floor of the San Marcos campus library.

Child Development is the journal of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD), and includes articles, essays, reviews, and tutorials on various topics in the field of child development since 1930. The print edition is found at the Escondido Center Library; online is available through the Library catalog.

New Online Resources @ the Library

Get a jump on your Fall 2011 coursework! We have two new online research products available to Palomar students and faculty

Films On Demand offers over 6,000 current, educational streaming videos (produced by Films for the Humanities) covering a variety of disciplines and subjects. Users can create personal playlists incorporating full-length videos or segments, and embed segments into courseware such as Blackboard. NOTE: embedded videos only work with flash technology at this time, and will not work with Windows Media or Quicktime. ScienceDirect Health & Life Sciences Collection offers full-text coverage of hundreds of scholarly journals in disciplines such as nursing, biology, allied health professions, and many more. The research included in these publications is relevant to a variety of other subjects as well, including geography and GIS. This database was paid for with an NSF grant awarded to Professor Wing Cheung from Palomar College's Geography Department.

Update: Prom dress drive review

The 2nd annual Palomar Library prom dress drive wrapped up on Friday and it was a success! We were able to collect formalwear to help make prom special for area high school girls. Here's the final tally:

1 pair prom of shoes

1 formal skirt

2 formal pant suits

39 prom dresses

These items have been delivered to the Vista Library, where area teens will "shop" for them. Including our donations, the Vista Library collected 421 dresses!

A big thank you to all of you in the Palomar College community that donated. More thanks to the local businesses that donated: Steinmart in Temecula for hangers and CJ Cleaners in Escondido and Marketplace Cleaners in San Marcos for dry cleaning bags. Finally, a big thanks to Katherine Gannett who put this drive together. To the girls shopping the dresses this year- have a wonderful prom!

Is there a journal or magazine you are interested in reading? Here's how to see if we have it here at the Palomar College Library.

Use the List of Periodicals to see if we have the journal in print or in a database. You can search the list by title or ISSN, browse the alphabetical list of titles or browse by subject area. This will show the date range the library has and if it is available in print or in an online database.

If you are interested in a periodical we only have in print (especially if you don't where or if it is indexed online) GoogleScholar is a handy tool. You can use the Advanced Search options to search articles by a specific author, or for topics within a specific periodical. You will not have online full-text access, but you can use the citation information to find the articles in the print collection.

Need help finding a specific article? Here's how!

Did you find a great article? Are you having a hard time finding it in the library? Here are some ways to see if the Palomar College Library has full-text access.

First, find as much information about the article as possible. Make a note of the article title, the article author, the journal or magazine title, the date or volume/issue number, pages etc. The more information you have, the easier it will be to find the article. It will also make it easier to cite late on.

If you do not have all the citation information, try using Google Scholar http://scholar.google.com/ to find the missing information. (In some cases, Google Scholar might link directly to Palomar databases. See Scholar Preferences for more information http://scholar.google.com/scholar_preferences ).

Once you have the full information there are two ways to look for the article:

Use the List of Periodicals to see where we have full text- in print or electronically in a database. Use the title of the journal or magazine when searching this list. Use date or volume information to find the article in print or in a database

OR use the Periodicals Citation Linker. Enter all the citation information you have (you must include a periodical title or ISSN) and click "Look Up."

Now Available: Images from UCLA's Fowler Museum and Colby College Museum of Art

Palomar faculty and students now have access to images from the Fowler Museum at UCLA and the Colby College Museum of Art.

The new collection includes approximately 700 images from the Fowler Museum's permanent collection. The Fowler collection includes art, ethnographicand archaeological objects from Asia, Africa, the Pacific and the Americas. The museum is home to one of the largest and finest African art collections in the United States, which is reflectedin the ARTstor collection. The Colby College Museum of Art is now sharing 2,500 images from their permanent collection. Their collection specializes in American art from the 18th century to present. Pass on those fond memories by participating in the Library Prom Dress Drive!

For the 2nd year in a row, Palomar College Library, in conjunction with Vista Public Library, will be collecting gently used prom dresses for area teens. The library will be collecting dresses between March 31st and April 15th. On April 16th, dresses will be "shopped" at the Vista Library by students from area high schools. Preregistration is necessary to shop for a dress.
Donors are requested to bring dresses to the library on a hanger in a plastic cleaner bag, if possible.
Donations of prom shoes and jewelry are also being requested.
Last year, the Palomar Community provided over 30 dresses for the drive. Dresses that are not selected by prom goers are donated to the Armed Services YMCA at Camp Pendleton.

These images of Iznik ceramics from the Ottoman period were photographed by Walter Denny. Outdoor Photographer provides essential articles and tips on wildlife, travel and outdoor sports photography. It covers topics ranging from technique to equipment to recommended locations.
Out is a monthly entertainment, fashion, and lifestyle magazine focused on the LGBTQA community.
Advocate, first published in 1967, is the oldest continuing LGBTQA-interest magazine in the United States. It covers news, politics, and opinions.

Orange County Register Now Available in ProQuest Newspapers

The Orange County Register (OCR) is now searchable and available full-text online (1986-present) in the Library's ProQuest Newspapers database. You can also connect directly or through the library catalog (search the newspaper title).

OCR includes local news from Orange County, California, but also provides regional coverage of neighboring counties, including San Diego. It replaces the San Diego Union-Tribune (SDUT) in the ProQuest Newspapers database, which is no longer available full-text. SDUT is still available in print at both the San Marcos and Escondido Center libraries. Please contact Tamara Weintraub with questions or comments.

Now Available: Images from American Folk Art Museum

Palomar faculty and students now have access to more than 1,600 images featuring traditional folk art and works by contemporary self-taught artists held by the American Folk Art Museum. Works from the museum's permanent collection are now available for viewing in Artstor. The images are of American and international artists' work from the 18th century to the present in a variety of media such as paintings, books on paper, sculpture, trade figures, signs, weathervanes, furniture, ceramics, needleworks, rugs, quilts, and coverlets. Join us at the Palomar College Library as we campaign to help fill the campus food pantry. From Jan. 31- Feb. 14, 2011 you can get involved AND enter to win a chance at a prize! Please bring a donation of food, hygiene items, or disposable diapers to the library. You will then be eligible to win a gift card, our first place prize in the food drive contest. All you have to do is guess how many pieces of candy are in the candy jar. If you guess the number closest to the actual amount, you win!
To enter: bring a donation to the library, take an entry for your guess and fill it out, and place your entry in the box. Enter as often as you like; however, a donation is required for each entry.
The winner will be announced on February 14th.

Facelift for ProQuest Databases: New Look and Features

Sometime in January 2011, all our ProQuest online research databases (ProQuest Newspapers, Historical Newspapers, GenderWatch, and Ethnic NewsWatch) will get a new look and features. All the same great content will be there, but you'll find it easier to search for, locate, and manage the information. Also, you will discover greater functionality for downloading, printing, and sharing article results, creating reference lists, and narrowing or sorting results.

Other features include the ability to:

Set up your own user account with "My Research"
Create RSS feeds
Organize results and manage saved documents
Create content alerts to be sent to you via email
Assemble lists of results for sharing on your favorite social networking site

New ProQuest will be accessible through a new durable URL, http://search.proquest.com/. This means individual article URLs will change as well. You can try it out now if you're using a networked computer on-campus, by clicking the link above. (Off-campus and wireless access to the new interface will be available after final implementation in January.) Until the change-over, access on- and off-campus will continue to be provided through the old interface by going to the Online Research Databases page and selecting the database you want to search.

Once the change occurs, please check and update your links to these databases and articles on your webpages, syllabi, Blackboard sites, etc. Re-directs will be provided from the old pages to the new site for a limited period.

Oxford English Dictionary Online: Changes to URL and New Features

On November 30, 2010 the website address for Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Online changed to http://prozy.palomar.edu/login?url=http://www.oed.com. Library users may access this database directly through URL or go the the Library database web page. The old URL will continue to be availabl e until March 31, 2011 to allow time to update bookmarks and other links from the site.

All current standard web browsers will be supported, including Internet Explorer for Windows (version 7 and higher), Firefox Mac and Windows (versions 3 and higher), Safari Mac and Windows (versions 3 and higher), Opera Mac and Windows (versions 9 and higher), and Google Chrome Mac and Windows. If you are currently running Internet Explorer 6, it is advised that you upgrade.

In addition to greater search functionality, the new website includes the entire text of the Historical Thesaurus to the OED (published in book form in 2009), allowing searchers to follow semantic links throughout the dictionary. For example, go to the OED's entry for utopia, and follow the Thesaurus links to the terms heaven (Old English), Cockaigne (c1305), El Dorado (1596), nonesuch (a1618), Fiddler's Green (1825), never-never land (1900), the Big Rock Candy Mountain (1917), etc. More information about other new features can be found at http://www.oed.com/public/welcome/welcome-to-the-new-edition.

"Sites and Photos": Images of archaeological and architectural Sites

Palomar students and faculty may now view over 90,000 images in ARTstor of ancient sites and in-situ art provided by archeologist and photographer Shmuel (Samuel) Magal and the stock media company, Sites & Photos. The photos and detailed data capture Classical, Megalithic, Islamic, Crusader, and Gothic archaeology and architecture primarily from religious and biblical locations in Israel, Jordan, Tunisia, Greece, Italy, Spain, Malta, and Cyprus. The collection also includes pictures of Greek and Roman painting, sculpture, mosaics, and decorative arts. Click here for more information.

Free AND Useful Research Tool on the Web: Wolfram|Alpha

WolframAlpha is a free and open computational knowledge engine that retrieves factual information on just about anything you can think of. Enter a math formula, and get the solution as well as a proof. Input a unit of measurement, and get all conversion possiblities. Ask about a city, and learn the population, unemployment rate, cost of living, etc. It covers everything from mathematics, physics, dates and times, sports, units of measure, history, linquistics - if you can think of it, you can probably find it. According to its FAQ, it contains trillions of pieces of data and growing!

WolframAlpha pulls its information from external sources, as well as an internal knowledge base of data derived from official public and private websites and other primary sources, compiled and organized by WolframAlpha folks. A "Source information" button at the bottom of results pages provides sources and references to data retrieved. Check the site FAQ for more information about the site and its content. Click the link above to begin filling your knowledge base!

Intelecom Update: New Video Player Released

Intelecom video clip database has installed an upgraded video player, with faster load times and improved stability. You will automatically see and use this new player when you select a clip in the database and click the "URL" button to play it. However, if you previously inserted a clip into a Blackboard site, webpage, etc., using the database "Embed" button, you must re-embed the clip into your page in order to view it in the new video player.

Intelecom has announced that it will continue to keep the old player active, but it will no longer support (e.g., within new browsers) or troubleshoot it.

Online in time for summer! Four new online resources are now available to Palomar students and faculty. Take a look, and get a jump start on your summer and fall courses:

INTELECOM is a hosted digital repository of academic video clips - streamed on demand, covering a variety of video collections including Biological Sciences, Oceanography, History, Philosophy, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, Health, and Environmental Studies. Videos may be downloaded and embedded into course software such as Blackboard. To connect, go to the Library database webpage and choose the appropriate link, Intelecom (on-campus) or Intelecom (off-campus/wireless). Passwords required to use off-campus (request from Library). This subscription was made possible by generous funding from CCCConfer.
ScienceDirect offers full-text coverage of over 650 journals in the physical sciences, and access to citations and content from other journals and books in many more disciplines.
FashionSnoops is an online forecasting, consulting, and reporting service and tool for the fashion and design industries. It includes up-to-the-minute industry reports and news covering trends, concepts, shows, retail, and vintage, as well as a customizeable interactive design board. This subscription was made possible by the joint research of Fashion, TechEd, and Library faculty.
International Bibliography of Theatre & Dance contains the full 14 volumes of the IBTD published by the Theatre Research Data Center (TRDC) at Brooklyn College. It comprises a fully indexed, cross-referenced and annotated databank of over 60,000 journal articles, books, book chapters and dissertation abstracts on all aspects of theatre and performance in 126 countries since 1984. Select full-text is also included.

Back in our collection: Aztlán

We constantly review our collection to ensure that it is relevant and meets our students' needs. Currency to curriculum and instruction at Palomar College is one of several criteria we use to select periodicals and other resources in all formats. With this in mind, we've resumed a subscription to Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies. Published by the flagship Chicano Studies Resource Center at UCLA, this has been considered the "journal of record" in the field since 1970. Scholarly, interdisciplinary articles and other content address research and issues that are "informed by the Chicano experience."

Aztlán is published twice a year, and is available for reading in print at the San Marcos campus library or online (Palomar eservices or network login required through wireless or off-campus connections).

New online journal: Economists' Voice

The Economists' Voice (EV) has joined a growing list of important online scholarly journals available to Palomar College students and faculty. Published by Berkeley Electronic Press since 2004, EV consists of brief articles by experts in the field of economics, including Nobel Prize winners, past chairs of the President's Council of Economic Advisors, and intellectuals whose analyses and opinions help shape modern economic theory and policy. New Online: TESOL Journal

The Library now provides access to the new periodical, TESOL Journal (TJ). Published by the association, Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc., this is a peer-reviewed electronic journal covering current theory and research in the field of ESOL. It serves as a forum for teachers of second and foreign languages at all levels.

Readers of this publication may also be interested in TESOL Quarterly, another peer-reviewed research journal for ESOL practitioners, other educators, and theorists. Previously available in print at Palomar College, it, too, is available now in electronic format only.

New Photography Periodicals: Photo District News (PDN), and Color

Money may be tight, but we're doing everything possible to ensure students have the resources needed for a good education. Just added to our growing collection of current photography publications are two industry leaders, Photo District News (PDN) and Color. PDN provides the latest news, analysis, interviews, and portfolios from the photography world, including reports and in-depth features on issues of concern and interest to professional and student photographers. Color presents articles on contemporary photographers, as well as extensive photographic essays and images. Both magazines are available on the 2nd floor of Palomar's San Marcos library.

ARTstor, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has added nearly 6,000 high-resolution images of American and European costumes and accessories from the Brooklyn Museum. The Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection , established in 1902, contains a comprehensive collection of American fashion from the late 19th to mid-20th century, and features masterpieces by many prominent designers from this period. The images in ARTstor represent highlights of the Museum's entire collection of 23,500 objects. ARTstor has added a collection of photographs of West African art and culture taken by Christopher D. Roy. The collection will eventually include approximately 3,500 images taken since 1970 in the villages and towns of the Bobo, Bwa, Fulani, Lobi, Mossi, and Nuna in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Nigeria, and Niger. These include art and ceremonial objects, events and performances, as well as their production and manufacture. New in ARTStor: French Fashion Illustrations

65 images of early 20th-century French fashion have been added to ARTstor. These come from fashion plates for the magazine La Gazette du Bon Ton, that are now part of the Minneapolis College of Art & Design collection. The images are illustrations by prominent artists that appeared in the magazine, including hand-colored prints depicting the latest haute couture designs from Parisian fashion houses. Can't afford that magazine, newspaper, or journal subscription anymore? Save your money and get it from the Library! We subscribe to hundreds of periodical titles that Palomar College students and faculty may access in the library or online. Plus, we keep back issues (in print, online, or microfilm) for hundreds more. Search our List of Periodicals to see if we've got what you're looking for.

If we don't have the periodical or article you're looking for, we can try and get it from another library. Fill out and submit this interlibrary loan request online, or come into the Library for further assistance.

And, although the economy may be bad, we've added two new periodical subscriptions to help with your class and research assignments.

New Labor Forum

This is a peer-reviewed labor journal owned, edited, and published by the Murphy Institute/City University of New York. Some of the issues explored, amongst others, include the global economy’s impact on work and labor, new union organizing and political strategies, and labor’s new constituencies. This may be read in the San Marcos campus library, or accessed online anywhere by special request (see contact below).

Journal of Evidence Based Dental Practice

This journal publishes articles, and article reviews, on the results and outcomes of clinical procedures and treatment.

Seamlessly integrates 17 reference sources from Gale, Macmillan and Scribner, along with full-text articles from over 100 academic journals. Over 1,500 primary source documents, including some native language documents with new translations. Microfilm Collections are included, with a high percentage that never have been available electronically in the United States before. Historical news sources, 500 maps, 1,000 images.
Biography Resource Center
Contains more than 422,000 biographies on more than 335,000 people from around the world and throughout history. It combines more than 135 frequently consulted Gale biographical databases with nearly 300 full-text periodicals.
LegalTrac
LegalTrac provides indexing for more than 1,500 major law reviews, legal newspapers, specialty publications, Bar Association journals and international legal journals, including more than 200 titles in full text.

A Note About Textbooks

The President’s Associates have granted funding to provide a limited amount of book loans to students who are financially unable to purchase a required textbook for their class. Applications are available only at ST-17(near the Student Services Building). Students will need to fill out the application completely and have either their professor OR counselor sign it and turn it back in to the office. At this time, due to overwhelming demand, only one textbook per student will be loaned out this semester.

Additionally, the Associates have provided funding to the Library to purchase many of the core textbooks for students to use at the Library to complete their homework. The books must be used at the Library and cannot be taken home. Currently there are about 200 textbooks available at the library.

Students who take classes at the Escondido Center can check with library there. They have purchased textbooks with funding from the President's Associates again this year.

Perfect for reading on-the-go or during a quick class break, The Week summarizes, organizes, and presents the news and other timely stories of the world around us. Using snippets of articles, editorials, reviews, and additional content from U.S. and international news sources, it can serve as a "jumping off" point for students looking for term paper ideas, or just as a way to catch up on what's going on.

Published each week, current issues can be found in the San Marcos' library Current Periodical Shelves located between the Circulating Media and Reference areas.

All registered students, faculty, and staff may retrieve and read articles from this in the library, on campus, or anywhere else in the world. President's Associates Fund Textbooks for Library

The San Marcos Campus Library and the Escondido Center Library have added over 150 textbooks to its Reserve section thanks to a grant by the President's Associates. The first two weeks of the spring semester have been spent adding these textbooks to those that the instructors have given to be placed in the Library.

Students may use the textbooks while they study in the Library. If the program goes well, the associates will continue to grant funds for book purchases so that the reserve section will have a significant number of textbooks for students.

New Research Databases: Ethnic NewsWatch and GenderWatch

The economy may not be great, but Palomar College Library still provides wonderful resources to help with class assignments. New for Spring semester 2009 (and available now, just in time for Fall finals!) are two research databases that greatly expand our offering of electronic resources:

GenderWatch

This includes scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, regional publications, books, and NGO, government and special reports that focus on how gender impacts a broad spectrum of subject areas. With archival material dating back to 1970 in some cases, GenderWatch is a repository of historical perspectives on the evolution of the women's movement, men's studies, the transgendered community, and the changes in gender roles over the years.

Ethnic Newswatch

This is an interdisciplinary, bilingual (English and Spanish) and comprehensive full text database of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press. ENW titles offer additional viewpoints to the mainstream press.

Both databases use the familiar ProQuest search interface employed by several other Palomar databases (ProQuest Newspapers, Historical New York Times, and Historical Los Angeles Times). Off-campus access is available with your campus e-services login.

Updated Resources on The Environment and Sustainable Living

We have had some very thought-provoking presentations on the Campus Explorations theme of The Environment and Sustainable Living: Global Crises and Solutions. If you have the opportunity, please join us each Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in Room P-32.

Personalize the Online Databases with Your Own Settings

Make the research experience all your own by creating personalized accounts in some of the Library's online research databases. These accounts allow you to save search strategies and results, organize research into folders, or save screen settings to retrieve later. Some databases let you share account information with others or set up "alerts" that automatically notify you when new articles appear.

You can set up personalized settings in the following databases:

EBSCO databases (includes Academic Search Premier, Psycharticles, CINAHL, and many more): choose "Sign In To My EBSCOhost" at the top of any screen to begin
JSTOR: select "MyJSTOR" at the top of any screen
NetLibrary: click "Create a Free Account" at the top of the screen to set up, and "Log In" anytime after.
CQ Researcher: select "Log In" under "Your Profile" in the left-side navigation box.
ArtSTOR: click the "Log In To ArtSTOR" box at the top right-hand corner of the screen to register for the first time or login afterward.
ProQuest Databases (Historical New York Times, Historical Los Angeles Times, Newspapers): choose "Set Up Alert" or "Create RSS Feed" from any results screen to have updates automatically delivered to you by email or a feed.

For help setting up personal account, select "Help" in any of the databases. Or, just explore the features on your own!

Campus Explorations @ The Library: Am I really saving the planet? It’s your right to know!

In support of the College’s general education curriculum, the library is now offering instructional sessions that focus on the Campus Explorations theme, the Environment and Sustainable Living: Global Crises and Solutions. Instructors, student groups and others are encouraged to come to the library for a discussion on the conflicting research and news reports regarding the environment and sustainable living. For example, hybrid cars are the rave, but some sources say the cost of the production is not worth the benefit of driving one. Discussion on conflicting sources of information will be followed by instruction on how to find and evaluate information about the environment and sustainable living. If we believe it’s our responsibility to save the earth, it’s also our right and responsibility to be informed about how to save it.

For searching and gathering documents across multiple databases, try our federated search engine. One nice feature is the ability to simultaenously search the library book catalogs of Palomar, MiraCosta, CSUSM, SDSU, USD, UCSD, San Diego County Library system, and our online e-book collection. Select Library Books & Media at the search screen.
If you’re want to locate a specific journal, magazine, or newspaper, search our periodical website. This quickly tells you whether we have it online or in hardcopy. It also lets you connect to most online articles right away (for hardcopy titles, it will tell you which issues we have on the shelf).

Still can't find what you're looking for? Request an interlibrary loan (see post below).
